A year in review

As 2024 draws to a close, Enfield Council reflects on an incredible year for the Journeys and Places programme.

The Journeys and Places programme has delivered a range of projects and community initiatives alongside many partners this year. Below, we highlight some of the key achievements and milestones of the past year as we continue to work to create a more vibrant, greener and healthier Enfield.

This year Enfield Council adopted the Enfield Transport Strategy and Enfield Place Shaping Framework to support the new Local Plan. These critical documents will guide the borough’s work in delivering a more prosperous Enfield over the coming years and will inform project delivery from the Journeys and Places programme.

Transforming Town Centres and Public Spaces

Enfield Town Phase 1: Preparations are being finalised for the launch of Phase 1 of the Enfield Town Liveable Neighbourhood project in early 2025. Key features that have been delivered include the new public space ‘Saddlers Square’ on Church Street, a new path through the Library Green connecting to the upgraded crossing to Town Park, and new rain gardens along Church Street.

‘An Angel for Edmonton’ sculpture: Installation of this inspiring new public artwork by artist Rafael Klein and co-designed with local residents through the Curate Enfield public arts programme.

Southgate Pocket Park and Chase Side rain gardens: Delivery of new Pocket Park, offering a relaxing green space for the community in Southgate, as well as new rain gardens along Chase Side, both planted with support from local community groups and schools.

The Pavilion on The Green: Located in Edmonton Green, The Pavilion hosted a vibrant summer programme of events, bringing people together in a this newly activated community space.

Expanding Walking and Cycling Networks

Completion and progress on several walking and cycling routes informed by the local community:

Bush Hill Park Path: A key section of the Enfield Town to Ponders End Station Walking and Cycling Route.

Brownlow Road Walking and Cycling Route: Enhancing safety and accessibility for active travel.

Maidstone Road Public Space Improvements: Upgrades to make the area more welcoming for people walking and cycling.

Supporting infrastructure including additional bike hangars and micro-mobility bays to encourage cycling across the borough.

Celebrating Community Events and Services

10 Years of the All Ability Cycling Hub: One of our most popular services, the Hub’s birthday was celebrated at a community event and ran every Monday rain or shine, offering inclusive cycling opportunities for local residents and groups including Age UK and One-to-One Enfield.

Summer Cycling Fun: Over 200 young people participated in cycling sessions at Pymmes Park, trying out different types of cycles and building confidence.

Dr Bike and Cycle Training: 1,746 bikes were serviced by our free Dr Bike service, and more than 1,700 people undertook cycle training (315 adults and 1,414 school pupils), both supporting people to cycle safely and confidently around the borough.

Engaging Schools for a Greener Future

Travel for Life Programme: A record-breaking 61 schools (55% of all schools in the borough) participated in the programme, with two schools shortlisted for TfL’s Top Schools Awards.

Road Safety and Air Quality Workshops: Students engaged in interactive sessions about road safety and improving air quality.

Beat the Street: The borough’s 6-week game inspired 8,373 participants, including 16 schools, to collectively travel by walking, wheeling, cycling or another form of active travel for over 36,000 miles around Edmonton.

School Streets Expansion: Introduced three new School Streets at Latymer All Saints Primary, Chesterfield Primary, and Prince of Wales Primary, creating safer, healthier environments for children as they travel to and from school.

Community Engagement and Partnerships

Disability Reference Group: Celebrating its first full year, the group expanded to 10 members, playing a vital role in ensuring accessibility and inclusion is considered across the programme.

Residents actively shaped projects, providing valuable input on the Southgate Masterplan Vision, Enfield Town to Ponders End Station Walking and Cycling Route, Quieter Neighbourhoods initiatives, Ashfield Parade Parklets in Southgate, Devonshire Square in Palmers Green, and the St James Play Area as part of Levelling Up Angel Edmonton.

Walk and Talk groups: Supported the establishment of new community walk and talk groups.

Looking Ahead

The momentum from 2024 carries us into an exciting 2025. With the commencement of the Levelling Up Angel Edmonton programme,  launch of Phase 1 of the Enfield Town Liveable Neighbourhood project, as well as a range of other projects, the Journeys and Places programme remains committed to fostering a sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant borough for everyone. We thank the community and everyone we have worked with this year for their support and collaboration in making these achievements possible.
