Enfield publishes first Strategic Monitoring Report: A baseline for healthier, sustainable travel

Enfield Council has released its inaugural Strategic Monitoring Report, covering the baseline year from July 2024 to June 2025. This landmark publication marks a major step in Enfield’s commitment to improving transport, air quality, and sustainable travel across the borough. The report provides a comprehensive overview of traffic volumes, active travel trends, and air quality, setting a benchmark for future progress.

Drawing on data from 17 monitoring sites, the report reveals that while motor vehicles remain the dominant mode of transport, there is a clear and growing shift towards walking and cycling. Notably, four locations saw more than 20% of daily journeys made by pedestrians or cyclists, with Cecil Road EN1 and Fore Street N18 standing out for their high levels of active travel. The Council’s long-term strategy aims to make walking and cycling the natural choice for short trips, improve safety for school journeys, and reduce the impact of private cars on local streets.

The monitoring also included continuous air quality measurements using advanced sensors. Encouragingly, most sites maintained low pollution levels throughout the year, though some locations experienced moderate readings during winter months, reflecting broader regional trends. These insights will help inform targeted interventions to further improve air quality and public health.

Enfield’s baseline report sets out a clear vision for a healthier, more sustainable future. By tracking progress in both motor vehicle and active travel volumes, and by monitoring air quality, the borough is well-positioned to deliver on its transport strategy and create safer, greener streets for everyone.
