The project received praise in the Collaborative Partnership category at the Dft Special Recognition Awards
We’re pleased to share that the Enfield Town to Broxbourne Walking and Cycling Route, led by the Journeys and Places team, was highly commended in the Collaborative Partnership category at this year’s Department for Transport Special Recognition Awards. The route, which follows the historic New River, provides a safer and more accessible way to walk, wheel and cycle between Enfield Town and Broxbourne.
The project was delivered in partnership with National Highways, Transport for London, Thames Water, Norman Rourke Pryme, Metis Consultants and Kenson Highways. Working collaboratively, the project overcame a range of challenges, from land ownership and utility constraints to unexpected site conditions. Local residents, walking and cycling groups, schools and other local stakeholders were engaged from the early stages and informed elements of the design. The result is a welcoming, heritage-sensitive corridor along the New River, complete with new wayfinding and seating.
The route has already had a positive impact locally, with residents using it for school runs, leisure cycling, and nature walks.
“We [my toddler and I] both absolutely love using the path and are always talking about the wildlife we see… I also use the path for leisure cycling on my own and always enjoy it.” – Local resident
The project has also received praise from Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, who described it as “one of the most beautiful walking and cycling routes in London.”
Members from across the project team had the opportunity to celebrate the commendation together at the Strictly Highways awards event in Blackpool.
